I don't know anything about fabric or patterns. How do we get started?

Some people prefer to visit fabric stores and select their own patterns and fabrics. But it is not required. I will guide you through the process, so you don't really need to attend those details. You just need to know what you like in terms of styles, textures, and color. I can narrow the pattern choices or design something new. Then I will pull together fabric swatches for your review.

In addition to traditional fabric stores, there are now many on-line resources offering a plethora of designs and colors. Once you are satisfied with the choices, we can proceed.

An initial one-hour consultation is free. Further refinements to the design will be billed at an hourly rate.

Won't this look homemade?

People are often surprised at the finesse that is seen in custom garments. These garments will rival or exceed the quality of any garments you can find in ready-to-wear. We all have horror stories from early home ec projects. However, the puckered seams and uneven hems are beginners errors and I've been sewing for decades. I use high quality equipment. My hand work is flawless.

Do you work on men's clothing?

Yes, although men generally have fewer fitting issues than women. Everyone has their strengths, I suppose, and I prefer to work on women's day wear.

How much does will this cost?

Many people expect that custom sewing will be less expensive that ready-to-wear. Unfortunately, that only applies if you do your own sewing. There is a savings, but it comes over time. Instead of settling, you will have a well-fitting garment in the style, fabric, and color of your choice. How many garments do you have hanging in your closet that have only been worn once or twice, because they just don't look good once you get it home?

It is difficult to give exact cost numbers, because there are so many variables. A classic blazer made of wool gabardine might run about $225 – 300 depending on details. The same jacket made in cashmere would be several hundred dollars more.

You will see that this price is quite comparable to many nicer department stores. The garment will be in the style and color of your choice and perhaps most importantly, it will fit without costly alterations.

Initial garments will cost more, because I need to determine what specific changes I need to make to fit your proportions. Once we have develop a pattern that fits you, the time and cost for subsequent garments will be reduced.

Will I know the cost of my garment in advance?

Yes, before we proceed I will draw up an agreement detailing what will be involved and the final cost.

How long will it take to my garment?

Current turnaround is 4 – 6 weeks, although formal or bridal wear may take longer.

Why do I need an appointment?

I need to insure all my clients have my full attention when I am doing fittings or consultations. I also need uninterrupted time in my studio when working on complex items. However, I can be fairly flexible when setting appointments and will work with you to find a time that works best for you.

You will be charged for missed appointments. Also, be sure to come prepared. Wear the appropriate foundation garments and shoes. The fit will be affected.
